The Light Changes on The Land

SHEDDING OUR SKIN

In the Northern Hemisphere where we are, yesterday was the Spring Equinox, the beginning of warmer days and shifting light, leading toward the summer solstice in June.

In Wyoming spring is here early this year.  There's something so magical about this moment, right now, when spring's first long days seem to open up and the light moves differently across the land.  I'm walking slowly because everything deserves to be noticed... the sounds of singing birds, the warmth of sunshine kissing my skin for the first time in months, the shifts in the land and the aliveness, just out of sight, everywhere bursting with anticipation.  We are preparing to lay down our cloak of winter skin, our layers of protection, the days of deep cold and hibernation, the heaviness as the light stays longer in the afternoons.   The ski season, the carpools, the Big 5 at school are all ending, again.  A new season, a new sense of freedom is bringing us relief from all the planning, organizing and preparing.  Readying ourselves for expansion, renewal and blossoming into spring and summer, yet again, another cycle, a new rhythm.  And let's not kid ourselves, bracing a bit too because after 36 years here, I'm very aware the sky may bring snow or a month of cold rain again, so we live in appreciation for every moment here in the high desert, mountains of Wyoming.

HB Cafe is bustling with energy as we speak, people are enjoying their nourishing meals inside and out, the doors and windows are wide open to let the air move, freshen and cleanse the energetic winter buildup.  It's a practice called Lüften, a traditional German and Scandinavian practice to freshen indoor air.  We do it all winter at my home and at the cafe, but today feels extra special.

Below...I'm sharing a few things I've been loving in life lately...hope they resonate with you too!

Remember to soak it all in...

HERBAL MINERAL WATERS

I have been absolutely LOVING drinking herbal infused waters this winter!  I'm noticing improvement in my hair, skin and nails, moods and immune system.  Minerals are tough to get right with supplementation and here in the northern mountains we just don't have as much fresh food to eat during the winter months.Though...if you need help... I know a place that partners with local farms to provide yummy fresh food all year long...wink...wink.   I'm looking forward to keeping this up through the spring to nourish my family as we replenish our bodies for spring expansion.

Herbal cold infusions are a simple way to extract all the beneficial compounds from dried herbs into a water that you can drink cold or warm throughout the day.  This is wonderful way to supercharge your daily hydration and the options are endless.  You can turn these into electrolyte drinks by adding good quality salt.  Or make it an electrolyte lemonade by adding lemon and honey or a touch of maple syrup.  Yum!

There are endless combinations of plant allies and herbs you can learn about and combine.  I have a giant box of Mountain Rose Herbs sitting in my tiny kitchen that I'm currently experimenting with making hormone supportive blends, mineral rich blends and kid friendly blends.  But if you are a busy, busy bee and want to jump right in one of our favorite brands Anima Mundi, has a beautiful blend called Mineral.  Even though I make my own blends, I also drink this daily!  We've stocked Anima Mundi in our shop for over 10 years, we love this brand, they source their herbs ethically and are amazing quality.  Mineral is a blend of Gynostemma, Nettle Leaf, Oat Straw, Horsetail, Alfalfa and Rose Hips.  Anima Mundi says 'this tea offers a delicious way to support vitality and gentle rejuvenation from within—ideal as a daily tonic for grounding, strengthening, and mineral replenishment.'

This is one of our house teas on our newly launched Tea Menu at Healthy Being so you can come in and try a hot cup or pot of it at the cafe before you commit to a full bag.  We also stock it and sell it if you want to take a bag home.  I'm still drinking it warm because the mornings are chilly and it's my go to after my special coffee.  I'm also excited to try it iced as the days continue to warm.  This blend will make a beautiful cold infusion, steeped in cold filtered water overnight then strained.  This will also help to preserve the vitamin C from the rosehips.  Other fun way to make cold infusions are by making moon tea or sun tea!

Happy Sipping!

LOVING LOOFA

We have been stocking various types of kitchen sponges to support a healthier kitchen in our market for years.  We've experimented with coconut sponges, other plant fiber sponges and more.  They all have their strengths but Loofa is the way to go!  I'm in awe of this plant!  It makes the perfect, long lasting kitchen sponge that is tough enough to scrub pots and pans and gentle enough to wash glassware.  It doesn't smell strange or hold food smells.  And most importantly it is PLASTIC FREE and is a plant that grows on a climbing vine, in the gourd family.  No microplastics breaking down onto your dishes that you eat off of or going down your drain to pollute town water.  Loofa has a minimal processing requirements, is biodegradable and compostable.  Loofa is also a great exfoliator for your skin, so grab one for the shower too!
